Hi Kendra, I agree that Shahab Ahmed's anecdote above seems to run parallel to some of the themes found in Dr. Toorawa's interview. It seems significant that Ahmed chose to end the anecdote with the particular line you mentioned, "yes I know... but I do". I imagine that "but I do" would be unsatisfying or even frustrating for the philosopher to hear when he seems to be looking for clarity on a behavior that falls outside of his frame of reference for the way Muslims act. This response seems to imply that at least in this case, it is sufficient for the Muslim scholar himself to know the reasons for his own behavior. He has already offered that his family has been Muslim and consumed wine for generations, and does not owe any further explanation of this seeming contradiction to an outside observer.
