Michael Bienz (pronoucend Benz, like the car)

Pronouns: He/Him I teach English to students in grades 9 and 10 at North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Next year, I am teaching a 10th grade Humanities Block, which will combine World History and 10th grade English. Thinking specifically about my students who are Burmese or Bosnian Muslims, this institute will help me ensure that more students feel "seen" in the curriculum.

As someone who sings in choirs (I'm a tenor II), I am most excited about the live performances that are part of the Institute.

Aside from teaching, I sing, play piano, and ride my bike on my city's more than 100 miles of trails. I'm always reading a book and watching a show. Right now, I am reading George Takei's graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy, and I am watching Kim's Convenience on Netflix.

Something that might surprise you is that I ran for public office in 2020. While our campaign came nowhere close to winning, mostly due to gerrymandering, the Indiana State Legislature ended up investing $2 billion in public education, three times more than what teachers demanded.
